What the ??#?&%*!*?!$Is Plein Air Painting? All kidding aside, plein air painting is a French term meaning “open air”.It is defined as painting outside and generally these works are done directly from nature.The French Impressionists have taken credit for this kind of painting in the late 1800’s, although there were landscape painters here in America doing the same thing at about the same time. As a group, our goal is to carry on the tradition and promote the art of Plein Air Painting as William Merritt Chase had intended to, here on Long Island so long ago. We strive to preserve the beauty of our Island through plein air landscape painting, while demonstrating a high degree of professionalism and excellence in our field.
